PETITION: Remove the 100% Chinese EV Tariff For Affordable Cars & A Sustainable Future
To: The Government of Canada, The Office of the Prime Minister, The Minister of Finance, and the Provincial Government of Ontario.
We, the undersigned Canadian citizens and residents, are at a breaking point. The affordability crisis, particularly for vehicle ownership, is no longer an inconvenience; it is a fundamental threat to our economic mobility and quality of life. The average price of a new vehicle in Canada is now a staggering $66,000, pushing a basic necessity of Canadian life out of reach for young people, families, and fixed-income seniors.
Meanwhile, modern, safe, and technologically advanced EVs are available in markets like China for a fraction of the price—as low as $10,000. The 100% tariff imposed on Chinese EVs is an artificial barrier supposed to protects legacy automakers at the direct expense of Canadian consumers that isn’t even helping as witnessed by China’s boycott of canola oil. It is a regressive tax that fuels inflation and denies Canadians access to affordable, state-of-the-art transportation.
At the heart of this crisis lies a regressive and counterproductive policy: the 100% federal tariff on Chinese-made Electric Vehicles (EVs). This policy is a direct attack on Canadian well-being, and its defense by those in power represents a profound betrayal of the public trust.
Our Demands:
-
IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE 100% TARIFF on Chinese-made Electric Vehicles. This single action would provide instant relief from inflation by introducing fierce competition and affordable options into a market that is currently rigged against the consumer.
-
Should the government and its officials, including Mark Carney, refuse to advocate for and enact this change, we demand their immediate resignation for failing to act in the best interest of the Canadian people. By maintaining these punitive tariffs, they are betraying their duty to fight inflation and help “folks” struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. Inaction is complicity.
Why You Must Sign This Petition: This is Your Final Warning.
This is not a mere suggestion; it is a warning about the future of affordability in Canada. If we do not force a change now, the consequences are clear:
-
You Will Be Permanently Priced Out of the New Car Market. The trajectory is clear: prices are only going up. The $60,000 “cheap” EV of today will be the $80,000 standard of tomorrow.
-
Your Choice Will Vanish. You will be forced to buy overpriced, outdated models from a protected market with no incentive to innovate or lower prices.
-
The Green Transition Will Fail. How can we expect average Canadians to adopt EVs when the government’s policies make them unaffordable? These tariffs are anti-consumer, anti-competition, and anti-environment.
Why Removing the 100% Tariff is Overwhelmingly Good for Canada:
-
Instant Inflation Relief & Consumer Choice: The cheapest EV in Canada currently costs over $60,000. In China, comparable—and in many reviews, superior—EVs are available for under $20,000 CAD. Introducing these vehicles into our market would provide immediate, massive downward pressure on all car prices, both electric and gas-powered. This is the single fastest policy lever the government can pull to provide tangible cost-of-living relief for millions.
-
Accelerating Our Climate Goals at No Public Cost: Canada has ambitious and costly targets for EV adoption. These tariffs actively sabotage that goal by keeping the most affordable and technologically advanced EVs out of the hands of Canadians. How can we expect the middle class to “go green” when the government makes the most practical options unaffordable? Removing the tariff is a market-based solution to achieve our environmental targets faster.
-
Forcing North American Automakers to Compete and Innovate: For decades, the “Big Three” have enjoyed a protected market, leading to high prices and, at times, sluggish innovation. The introduction of serious, high-quality competition from Chinese automakers would force all manufacturers to compete on price, quality, and technology. This is how free markets are supposed to work, and Canadian consumers are the ultimate winners.
-
Economic Opportunity, Not Protectionism: Rather than hiding behind tariffs, our governments should be fostering a competitive business environment that attracts investment. Chinese automakers like BYD could be incentivized to build plants in Ontario, creating Canadian manufacturing jobs, as they are doing in other countries. Protectionism leads to stagnation; competition breeds excellence and opportunity.
The Betrayal of Canadian Well-Being and the Case for Resignation:
-
The Betrayal by Mark Carney: As a senior financial statesman, Mr. Carney’s primary public focus is on economic stability and fighting inflation. By supporting or failing to condemn a policy that artificially inflates the price of a major consumer good by 100%, he is abdicating his duty. This tariff is textbook inflation. To stand with this policy is to stand against the financial well-being of everyday Canadians. If he will not use his influence to fight for policies that lower costs, he does not deserve a position of economic leadership.
-
The Betrayal by Premier Rob Ford: Premier Ford has built his political brand on being “for the people” and supporting the “little guy.” The auto sector is central to Ontario’s economy. By not vehemently opposing a federal policy that keeps car prices astronomically high for his constituents, he is betraying his own base. Where is the Premier who fights for affordability? His silence on this issue is deafening and demonstrates a prioritization of political expediency over the economic pain of Ontarians. If he will not fight for lower car prices for the people of Ontario, he should resign.
This is not a partisan issue; it is a pocketbook issue. We are tired of being told to endure a cost-of-living crisis while our leaders actively uphold the policies that cause it. We are tired of empty rhetoric about affordability while a simple, effective solution is deliberately ignored.
We demand that our leaders choose Canadian consumers over protected corporate interests.
We demand the immediate removal of the 100% tariff on Chinese EVs.
And we declare that failure to do so is a resigning matter for those who have the power to advocate for change but choose not to.
