How Trump’s threats have brought Canada’s Liberals back from the dead
In the wake of US President Donald Trump’s threats against Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party has surged in the polls, shrinking the double-digit lead their Conservative rivals had held steadily since mid-2023.
The dramatic change in the country’s political landscape reflects how Trump’s tariffs and his repeated calls to make Canada “the 51st state” have fundamentally altered Canadian voters’ priorities.
Trump’s rhetoric has “pushed away all of the other issues” that were top of mind for Canadians before his inauguration on 20 January, notes Luc Turgeon, a political science professor at the University of Ottawa.
It has even managed to revive the once deeply unpopular Trudeau, whose approval rating has climbed by 12 points since December. And Trudeau of course has resigned and Canada has just selected their interim new Prime Minister — Mark Carney.
Mark Carney, former Bank of Canada governor, has been elected leader of the Liberal Party and will become Canada’s next prime minister. Winning over 85% of the vote, Carney defeated Chrystia Freeland, Frank Baylis, and Karina Gould.
His leadership marks a new chapter for the Liberals, potentially leading to an early federal election. Carney faces immediate challenges, including U.S. tariff negotiations under President Trump. Known for his outsider status, Carney emphasized his experience leading central banks during economic crises.
Appointed by Stephen Harper in 2008, he gained acclaim for stabilizing Canada during the financial crisis and later led the Bank of England through Brexit.
Born in Fort Smith, N.W.T., and raised in Edmonton, Carney has a background in finance and public service. A longtime Liberal adviser, he campaigned on scrapping the carbon tax and criticized Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. Carney must now sustain the party’s recent polling momentum.
Meanwhile,
Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney, aggressively trashed Donald Trump in his speech and promised to be the opposite of Donald Trump.
As opposed to many leaders, especially US Democrats, Mark Carney called out Trump relentlessly and kind of ruthless.
Mark Carney: “President Trump thinks Canada will cave in. We will never, ever bow down to a bully. Canadians will stick together.”

Carney called Trump unreliable and said that it would be Trump who will have to come to the table to him, in the mean time he said Canada’s business will look for more reliable allies. Carney also took a bit of a swipe at American imperialism and Trumps social and economic policies. Carney also scolded the American for profit health care system, basically calling it out as predatory. Carney legit said healthcare is a big business in the US, while it is a right in Canada and seems firm in the system of the commons.
Carney Says Canada’s Tariffs to Stay Until US Shows ‘Respect’
Canada will keep in place its retaliatory tariffs against US-made products as long as President Donald Trump persists with a trade war, said Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister-designate.
“The Canadian government is rightly retaliating with our own tariffs,” Carney said during his victory speech Sunday. “My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect — and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade.”…. More @ Bloomberg
The question is… Can Mark Carney be trusted?
It sounds like Mark Carney is not that trustworthy…

And the bad news,
Canada faces deep recession as trade war continues
Canada is on the brink of a severe recession due to escalating trade tensions, according to a new report from the Budget Office.
Blacklock’s Reporter says the forecast aligns with similar warnings from the Bank of Canada, raising concerns about the long-term economic impact of tariffs.
“Our analysis indicates these trade policies would cause a permanent reduction of approximately 2% in Canada’s real GDP over the medium term,” stated the Budget Office’s Economic And Fiscal Outlook report.
