Less than 1 in 5 favor US annexing Canada, Greenland: Survey
Less than one in five Americans favor the U.S. annexing Canada and semiautonomous island Greenland, according to a new survey released Tuesday.
The Yahoo News/YouGov poll found that 17 percent of U.S. adults favor Canada becoming the U.S.âs 51st state, an idea that President Trump has brought up several times since winning the 2024 presidential election. Over half of the respondents, 57 percent, are opposed to the potential expansion of the U.S.âs territory, while 26 percent said they were unsure.
Similar figures were discovered when respondents were asked about the possibility of Washington annexing Greenland, a foreign policy goal Trump has talked about in his first term and reiterated in the last few months. Around 19 percent of Americans are in favor of the U.S. annexing Greenland, a mineral-rich island whose foreign policy and defense are overseen by Denmark. Nearly half of Americans, 49 percent, are opposed to the idea while another third, 32 percent, were unsure, according to the survey.
Vice President Vance said he will travel to Greenland on Friday, a decision that came after officials in both Denmark and Greenland saw his wifeâs, Second Lady Usha Vance, visit as a provocation and part of Trumpâs push to overtake the Arctic island.
âThere was so much excitement around Ushaâs visit to Greenland this Friday, that I decided that I didnât want her to have all that fun by herself, and so Iâm going to join her,â Vance said Tuesday.
Usha Vance was set to travel with other U.S. officials as part of Washingtonâs delegation, with Greenland Prime Minister MĂște Bourup Egede saying it is a part of a âvery aggressiveâ pressure campaign âagainst Greenlandic society.â
Voters were split when asked if Trump has prioritized the most important issues in the first two months of his second term in the Oval Office. Around 43 percent said the president has focused on the countryâs âmost important problems,â while 45 percent of Americans said the commander-in-chief has focused on issues âthat arenât very important.â Some 12 percent were not sure, according to the survey.
The poll was conducted from March 20-24 among 1,677 U.S. adults. The margin of error was 2.7 percent.
So, why is Trump still adamant in annexing Canada?
Apparently, annexing Canada is part of the “Package Deal” with Vladimir Putin?
Greenland, Canada and even Ireland if he helps them with Ukraine
Vladimir Solovyov then said, âWeâll have to take back our bases in Eastern Europe, weâll have to go back to Berlin, weâll have to teach the Baltics to love the Russian language again”
Vladimir Solovyov has often been outspoken on Kremlin policies
Russian commentators have claimed they would be in the market to help Donald Trump secure Greenland and Canada in exchange for help with Ukraine.
Appearing on Russian state TV, Vladimir Solovyov and his fellow talkshow hosts were deep in conversation when he said âweâll help Trump take Greenland. And Canada,â before another interjected âand Ireland.â
The Ireland comment was met with surprise from another host who said that Trump âdidnât ask for itâ before it was quickly determined that it would be for a holiday like âSt Patrickâs dayâ.
They then talked about the division of Europe, and efforts to rip the continent apart.
Solovyov then said, âWeâll have to take back our bases in Eastern Europe, weâll have to go back to Berlin, weâll have to teach the Baltics to love the Russian language again.
âWe have so much work ahead of us,â he added before one of his co-hosts said âall of this work youâre talking about is only possible if [US Vice-President JD] Vance or someone like him wins the election in 2028.
âBecause if Trump gets so many sticks in his wheel that he loses the internal conflict after all.â
The news comes off the back of ongoing fighting between Ukraine and Russia, despite talk that a ceasefire may have been possible to agree following the arrival of Trump in the White House.
So far, no agreement has been made with Russia and Ukraine yet to see eye-to-eye on their expectations for peace.
This too, applies for Ukraineâs various allies, with Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, earlier today (March 23) dismissing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmerâs plan for a ceasefire.
He lambasted the âsimplistic” idea of the PM and other leaders in Europe who allegedly think “we have all got to be like Winston Churchill”.
Despite this, conversations between the key parties â including the US â have been frequent.
Mr Witkoff further that he âlikedâ Russian President Vladimir Putin saying, “I don’t regard Putin as a bad guy,” before adding, “He’s super smart.”
Last night (March 22) three Ukrainians were killed in a drone attack the capital city of Kyiv â including a five-year-old child.
Meanwhile,
Rep. Scott Perry: “We certainly don’t have to buy cheese from Canada or lumber from Canada and pay a 300% tariff. We have cows and we have trees in the US and we don’t have to put up with that crap from our allies. We’re tired of being abused.”

And Trump continues to claim Canada should become his countryâs 51st state, and to threaten Greenland as well.
Here is what is to come April 2…
Donald Trump may impose escalating tariff levels, and Canada could be on the lower end: Sources
Canada could be on the lower end of U.S. President Donald Trumpâs threatened global tariffs next week, the Star has learned.
Nothing, however, is guaranteed until Trump decides ahead of his April 2 deadline â which heâs dubbed âliberation dayâ for America â and no government officials are taking any assurances for granted, sources said.
As the tense cross-border relationship plays out on the federal election campaign trail, Canadian sources with knowledge of discussions between the two countries say White House officials have suggested Trump may impose three escalating levels of tariffs on Americaâs trading partners, with Canada getting hit on the lower end of the scale.
One insider said U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has conveyed that countries would be targeted at a low, medium or high tariff level. A second source said there is no clear information about what the high level might be â âis it 25, 70, 100 per cent or more?â â and which countries would face the upper range of tariffs. But the suggestion is tariffs in Canadaâs case could be âcumulative,â said a second source. Canadian steel and aluminum shipments to the U.S. have been penalized with a 25 per cent tariff since Mar. 12.
