Yes, Canada Not For Sales, But Ontario Is Quite Something Else.
By Natalie Manson
Ontario is not for sale, but Doug Ford track records suggest he’s ever ready for corporate sellouts?
You betcha.
On January 15 Doug Ford was seen at a press conference sporting a hat with the phrase āCanada is not for saleā, which was met with mostly positive responses, as people praised him for taking a stand against Trumpās proposed Canadian tariffs… Never mind chances are fairly slim for Canada as a whole to get Trump to agree to wave the tariffs as it is now.
Ontario is not sale but hey, Doug Ford is always open for business and doing the bidding of big business.
Fordās hat might say āCanada is not for saleā, but his record shows that under his watch Ontario sure is.
Ford is trying to use this moment to make people forget about his extensive history of corruption and scandals. This pretty much sum up what Ford is all about.
Fordās Hat Canāt Hide His Long List Of Corporate Sellouts
Ford wore a “Canada Is Not For Sale” ball cap during a meeting with Trudeau and other premiers in Ottawa last month. He has also preached Canadian unity, saying the provinces need to stick together to combat the threat, and scolded Alberta Premier Danielle Smith for refusing to sign a joint statement the prime minister and all other premiers agreed to about how to respond to Trump.
Doug Ford gets second hat to clarify that he is still for sale?
Soon after debuting his āCanada Is Not For Saleā hat, Ontario Premier Doug Ford was spotted wearing a second hat to clarify that he is still very much for sale.
āI was thrilled to see āCanada Is Not For Saleā hats flying off the shelves,ā said Ford. āIt reminded me why I became a politician in the first place: making money.ā
The hat reads āDOUG FORD IS FOR SALEā in all-caps font, leaving no doubt about the Premierās complete and utter lack of integrity. Where the first hat featured a Canadian flag on the side, the new one has a QR code for those interested in viewing Fordās latest bribe rates. Also, the hat is too small.
āIn todayās political climate, thereās no room for subtlety,ā explained Ford. āYou canāt just take your bribes under the table at your daughterās engagement party anymore. Thatās why Iām wearing this hat.ā
You see?
The Premier wants to send a clear message to Ontarians that thereās no shame in selling out for a little bit of cash, provided itās done within oneās home province. In an unrelated update, Ford reminded his constituents that his $200 rebate cheques will be in their mailboxes just in time for the early election heās going to call at the most financially opportune moment.
Ford paired his two hats with a T-shirt emphasizing that, while Canada is not for sale, many parts of Ontario are, such as vast swaths of the Greenbelt, all publicly owned museums, and Hamilton. His belt is made entirely of tear-off tabs that advertise his contact information for e-transfers.
āWe will never sell our country to America,ā said the Premier. āBut any American developers interested in purchasing land in Ontario should please come and speak to me directly.ā
In other news, opposition leader Marit Stiles has been pictured wearing a hat that reminds Ontarians that Ford previously endorsed Donald Trump.
Oops.
Open for business
When Doug Ford was running for Premier in 2018, he was caught on video promising he would open up the Greenbelt. After the video leaked he made the promise that he would not modify the Greenbelt and said he had changed his position.Ā However, in November 2022 just months after being re-elected, Ford announced that he would be carving land out of the Greenbelt to allow for housing development.Ā He claimed he was doing this to help Ontarioās housing crisis. Instead of offering to invest in more affordable housing or reintroducing the rent control he removed, Ford had decided selling the Greenbelt to developers was the best solution in helping the housing crisis.
It was revealed that some developers who were pushing for more development and are friends of Ford, attended Fordās daughterās $150 a ticket stag-and-doe and later her wedding. InĀ August of 2023 a report was released that showed that the majority of the sites removed from the Greenbelt were suggested by the Municipal Affairs and Housing Ministerās chief of staff.Ā The chief of staff had connections to developers, including receiving packages from them on how they could develop the Greenbelt. After this and further information came out about developers connections to Ford and the Greenbelt, Ford ultimately backtracked his decision.
In 2023 Ford announced a plan to redevelop Ontario Place.Ā As of December 2024 the cost of the governmentās redevelopment had become more than $1.8 billion. It was also found that the process for selecting new tenants for Ontario Place was not transparent or fair according to the provinceās auditor general.Ā It was found that government officials selectively communicated with representatives from companies bidding on the redevelopment, and also failed to meet best practices for this type of developer project. Part of this plan to redevelop includes a large wellness centre and spa operated by Therme Canada.Ā Therme Canada has been given a 95-year lease to build and operate,Ā which was met with controversy due to the length of the lease. The lease also requires the government to build 1800 parking spaces.
Doing the bidding of big business
In September 2024 Ford made the push to get beer and wine into convenience stores and other retailers. This was already planned for 2026, however Ford decided to make the move just over a year early. By doing this he cost taxpayers millions of dollars, all to give more profits to large corporations. The government had to make a one time $225 million payout to The Beer Store for revoking its exclusive right to sell 12 and 24 packs of beer.Ā However, that is not the only cost associated with this decision, the province could end up spending more than $1 billion.Ā The government is giving private-sector retailers a wholesale discount of 10 percent off the LCBOās basic retail price, giving more than 8,000 grocery and convenience stores the right to sell beer, wine, cider and other beverages at lower prices than the LCBO. All of this removes revenue from the LCBO and puts profit in the pockets of companies like Loblaws.
It isnāt just the Greenbelt, Ontario Place or the privatization of the LCBO. From theĀ redevelopment of NiagaraĀ to theĀ Long-Term Care companiesĀ Fordās time in office has been marked by a steady stream of news about how developers and corporate lobbyists have helped shape government policies. When Ford came to power he said Ontario was open for business. He wasnāt lying, he has consistently used his power to enrich his big business friends.
Ford has always shown us who he is, do not be fooled by his new messaging. He is willing to sell out to his developer friends and corporations. He may be saying Canada is not for sale, but the reality is Ontario has already been sold time and time again.
That said, residents of Ontario will be smartĀ vote wisely in the coming 2025 Ontario General Election.
Save your vote for for someone you believe may at least have some conscience to do some good in our interest. And judging from Ford’s past records, thatāsomeoneā isnāt Doug Ford and ilk.
Folks all over Ontario are saying “Canada Is Not For Sale, But Doug Ford Is Eveready For Sale…”
You have been cordially warned.
