Toronto’s Next Mayor And The Potential Impact On Real Estate

November 4, 2013 7:32 pm
Mayor, Rob Ford

Obviously a crackhead is not likely to become the next Toronto Mayor …

If not Ford, then who?

Ford could be hooked on: power.

ā€œHe is the mayor. He has real power. Power is as addictive as any drug and he’s not giving it up.ā€

Now that’s really dangerous.

Fiscal conservatives have to consider the possibility Rob Ford won’t be re-elected as mayor in 2014.

Ford ran in 2010 on a platform of fiscal prudence; an end to the ā€œgravy train.ā€ This time the race is likely to be more about character.

Councillor and TTC Chair Karen Stintz has declared early. Stintz actively opposed the mayor after he picked her to head the TTC.

She has used her position to craft a possible path to victory in 2014. Her job as TTC chair is the main reason she is talked about in the media.

If the mayor’s race is going to be more about character than policy, I’d argue a person of character would have resigned her position as TTC chair, rather than leading a revolt against the individual who gave her the job .

If Stintz had first resigned from the post Ford gave her, of course she would have had every right to disagree with him about the future of public transit. But that hasn’t been her way.

To me, she’s politically untrustworthy.

Stintz is also in favour of more revenue tools to fund public transit.

People can decide whether she is right in that position, but ā€œrevenue toolsā€ is a way to use 12 letters to spell ā€œtaxesā€.

Sales taxes and gas taxes hit low-income earners the hardest, as do taxes on businesses, which are passed on to the consumer. I’m not sure Stintz worries enough about that.

Former Scarborough councillor David Soknacki wants back into politics and has declared he is running for mayor.

At soknacki.com he lays out some reasonable positions, but fiscal conservatives who supported Ford will be given pause by the fact he was budget chief under former mayor David Miller’s spendthrift administration.

I don’t know John Tory as well as some, but better than most, as I work with him at Newstalk1010.

He is one of the best people you could be privileged to know. He has dedicated himself to the betterment of the city and worked tirelessly (he seems not to sleep) to that end, often without pay.

I don’t think anyone believes there would be a hint of personal scandal in a Tory administration.

Ironically, if Tory left his radio show to become mayor, the rest of us in talk radio would have less to talk about.

But would he hold the line on taxes in the manner of Rob Ford? I don’t think so.

Tory supports big government programs like all-day kindergarten (a provincial issue, but telling in terms of fiscal priorities) and would spend money on transit before looking for ways to save money at every government level.

That approach almost always ends in not achieving significant savings to fund new transit projects.

After all, once the project is underway, politicians tend to move back to the status quo on everything else.

That said, if your issue is character, Tory is your guy.

New Democrat MP Olivia Chow? From a fiscal conservative standpoint, forget it. That’s nightmare territory.

Councillor Adam Vaughan? A blow-hard with a nasty edge who should be a talk show host, not a mayor.

Councillor Shelley Carroll? Seems to be a nice person, but likely to raise taxes.

As for finding a reliable fiscal conservative to run for mayor, the public may not even care anymore, and that is the biggest tragedy of all.

Well, try me … I am both a Prudence Scrooch & Strategic Spendthrift, and the best thing about me is I am a born Visionary Artist. Toronto will look better than Mona Lisa’s smile under my stewardship.

If you think I can sell, then find a way to get me.

I m not the type who would bare his ass to get attention. I got some classssssssssssssss.
