Response from Shakhlo Sharipova
Hi Residents,
Thank you for connecting with me.
Public safety has always been a top priority for me. As an active member of the Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) with Police Division #53, I always bring community voices to this table and take back educational pieces to my community and distribute them.
I’ve organized numerous public safety events in our neighborhoods, funded by the City of Toronto, aimed at educating and raising awareness among vulnerable populations. My personal commitment to safety is deeply rooted, as I’m also a parent of a 23-year-old son with severe autism, who is non-verbal and prone to wandering. We experienced a terrifying incident when he went missing in our 21-story building, and I had to rely on the police to help find him. This experience, along with many tragic cases of wandering and drowning among autistic children, drives me to create presentations and organize community meetings to educate parents about safety measures. I also work closely with law enforcement, paramedics, and firefighters to strengthen collaborations and find ways to prevent such tragedies. Additionally, I’ve initiated free CPR courses for community members and partnered with landlords in Thorncliffe to address issues like building safety, carjackings, and fires. My efforts extend to organizing projects aimed at reducing gun violence and engaging our youth in positive activities to keep them away from crime. I believe my dedication, passion, and extensive community experience position me to make an even greater impact in keeping our neighborhoods and city safe.
City has implemented many programs when it comes to community safety, but from my perception there is a slight shifting of accountability towards the public/residents itself instead of making municipal departments more accountable and forcing them to do their job better. If I get elected, I will make sure that there is 1) enough funding/financial and other resources to implement public safety tools within communities and 2)shifting accountability percentage towards municipal departments. Of course my first job when elected would be assessing community needs in the lens of public safety and according to that assessment we will create a pathway of solutions, I will make sure that this assessment would be done in collaboration with residents and all departments accountable for our safety. It’s just some of my thoughts.
I am open to meet with Leaside residents associations if they would like to discuss this matter more or want me to address additional issues which I have not covered yet in my platform.
I hope it answers your question but again would be happy to meet with you all and chat more,
Warm regards,
