Trump announces 25% tariff on all cars not made in U.S.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all automobile imports to the United States next week but the deep integration of the North American industry has caused confusion about when those duties would affect the Canadian auto sector.
The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) on trade and “the long history of relations in the auto sector right back through the Auto Pact,” an automobile trade agreement signed between Canada and the U.S. in 1965. CUSMA was negotiated during the first Trump administration and boosted rules requiring a majority of automobile parts to be North American for the vehicle to be tariff-free.
A fact sheet provided Wednesday by the White House said automobiles imported under CUSMA will only be tariffed on the value of content not made in the United States. Automobiles will not face Trump’s latest duties until Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in consultation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, “establishes a process to apply tariffs to their non-U.S. content,” the White House said.
Trump said duties on all other automobile imports will take effect on April 2, with tariff collection beginning the following day. It also includes certain auto parts like engines, transmissions, powertrain parts and electrical components. Trump said the automobile tariffs were permanent and automakers would “have to move their parts divisions back to the United States.”
Shortly after, Canadian politicks are running amok over the announcement and started spewing BS:-
Carney pledges ‘all in Canada’ auto network amid tariff threats
Liberal Leader Mark Carney unveiled his party’s plan on Wednesday for the country’s auto sector, which will create a $2-billion “strategic response fund.” to protect the jobs of workers affected by Trump’s tariffs and “fortify the entire Canadian auto supply chain from raw materials to finished vehicles.”
“So, what we need to do is build more of those autos and more of each auto right here in Canada,” Carney said.
Excuse me, does Carney know what is he talking about? We don’t think so.
For the record, Carney single handed ruined and started the Housing Crisis in Canada by slashing interest rate to literally Zero 0% during his tenure as governor of Bank of Canada… That’s Carney only “skill”.
Meanwhile, the Conservative Party and the NDP have also vowed to fight back against Trump’s tariffs.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has proposed “dollar-for-dollar tariffs carefully aimed at maximizing impact on American companies while minimizing impact on Canadian consumers.”
When it comes to Conservatives, nothing is complete with their scandalous Premier of Ontario Doug Ford.

Rejects boosting trade ties with China, points to Europe
Liberal Leader Mark Carney Wednesday rejected accusations from his Conservative rival that he’s beholden to Beijing and said he thinks Canada’s trade-diversification strategy should prioritize boosting commerce with “like-minded countries” in Europe instead of China.
The truth is Canada ain’t got much choice… Seriously. Canada gotta pivot to China or join Trump’s “51st State”.
Canada is Blindly Following U.S. on Chinese EV tariffs: Economist

Basically, we reckoned Canada may benefit from having China carmakers set up manufacturing facilities as follows:-
- Save hundreds of thousand jobs potentially lost due to the tariff… The existing workforce may switch to new plants set up by Chinese carmakers, likely EVs.
- Save anticipated inflation as a result of the insane 25% tariffs on cars., as a matter of fact, such move may even help to reduce inflation since Chinese EVs are available for as little as $10,000 a pop.
- And this will help with Canada’s carbon-free initiative to reduce emissions and transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.
- As well as the move will send a signal to U.S. that bullying Canada may no longer be feasible as we got a friend in China, the alternative superpower with solid all rounded strength.
- Last but not least, the Bonus — partnership with China may also help to stop the U.S. from considering invasion or annexing Canada since China will definitely protect their interest ie. Chinese auto industry in Canada.
